IBM FlashSystem A9000/R - In rare cases, encrypted systems may require planned reboot to complete maintenance activities such as upgrade or MicroLatency module replacement

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

In rare cases, IBM FlashSystem A9000/R system that leverage the system encryption capability might encounter the following:
(1) During a replacement procedure of a malfunctioning MicroLatency module, the procedure will fail and the new MicroLatency module will stay offline, thus compromising the system redundancy.
(2) During the Flash Enclosure firmware upgrade that is done as part of the A9000 hot upgrade process, the Flash Enclosure upgrade will halt and will not be completed.

In both of the cases described above, a maintenance window will need to be scheduled for a complete restart of the IBM FlashSystem A9000/R system.

Content

The issue occurs due to a code defect in the Flash Enclosure encryption key management and does not affect access to the encrypted data.
Affected systems:
IBM FlashSystem A9000/R that leverage the system's encryption capability and run versions: 12.2.0 - 12.3.0.a.
Fix:
This issue is fixed in version 12.3.1 that was released on January 23rd, 2019.
To prevent this issue from happening IBM recommends:
  1. Customers that leverage the encryption capability are highly recommended to upgrade to 12.3.1 or to a newer release.
  2. Customers planning on leveraging the encryption capability are highly recommended to upgrade to 12.3.1 or to a newer release and only then use the  encryption capability.
