Upgrade to Windows 8.1.11.0 Server Requires License Component Upgrade

Troubleshooting


Problem

License compliance will fail following an upgrade to 8.1.11.0 Spectrum Protect server on Windows.

Symptom

Upon Spectrum Protect server startup the following will be reported:
ANR9956E Unable to load procedure address from dynamic link library ADSMLICN.DLL.
ANR9643E An incompatible version of the license module was detected on the system.

Cause

A change to how the Spectrum Protect server interacts with the ADSMLICN.DLL file has resulted in the need for an updated version.  When upgrading against an 8.1.11.0 package obtained from FixCentral or the IBM FTP site the license package is not included, which results in the problem condition. 

Diagnosing The Problem

After an upgrade to 8.1.11.0 Spectrum Protect server on Windows, reviewing the output of "query license" or running "audit license" the respective output will indicate that license compliance as FAILED or that server is not in compliance with license terms.  Backups to the Spectrum Protect server will report as failed.  Attempting to register a license will also fail.

Resolving The Problem

To resolve the problem please take the following actions:
1) Download the 8.1.11.0 Spectrum Protect server package from Passport Advantage.  The part number will be CC86SML, and the full description will be: 
IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.11 Windows (64-bit) Server and Storage Agent Multilingual (CC86SML )
The package from Passport Advantage will contain the license package - IBM Spectrum Protect license
2) Bring down your Spectrum Protect server.
3) Place the downloaded packaged into a folder and run it to extract the contents.  Run install.bat to launch IBM Installation Manager.  Click on Install,  select the IBM Spectrum Protect license package, and click Next:

Note:  In some situations, Update may need to be used rather than Install.  If Install does not allow for the license package to be installed, please try Update.
4) On the next screen, click on Next to continue:

5) Next, click on Install to install the license module:

6) Click on Finish to complete and click on the X in the top right to exit IBM Installation Manager.

7) Bring up your Spectrum Protect server.
8) Run "register license" via a Spectrum Protect admin command line.  For example:  register license file=tsmee.lic
9) Once the license is registered, confirm that "query license" now reports license compliance as valid.
