IBM Digital Badge Program Wins Training Magazine’s 2017 Silver Medal Award

Training Magazine awarded IBM’s Digital Badge Program the 2017 Silver Medal Award in its eLearning Design Challenge awards ceremony at the Online Learning Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. The publishing company recognized the program for its ability to gamify and increase engagement for online learning. The panel jury selected the IBM badge program out of hundreds of submissions from the world’s leading learning technology innovators. Jim Daniels and David Leaser from IBM Training & Skills were onsite to receive the award on behalf of IBM.

The program was selected because of its ability to “dramatically increase online learning attendance and engagement,” according to Lorri Freifeld, editor-in-chief for Training Magazine.

The IBM Digital Badge Program increased online learning attendance by 125% and exam completions by a whopping 694%. The average badge earner now returns to IBM’s Cognitive Class online learning program to earn three badges.

The IBM Digital Badge Program now issues digital credentials in 191 countries for more than 1,000 programs from design thinking to data analytics to project management.

The IBM Digital Badge Program is powered by Pearson’s award-winning Acclaim platform. Special thank you to Sara Bartlett from Pearson and the Acclaim team for developing the submission that helped IBM win this award.

Three-Peat for the IBM Digital Badge Program

This is the third win for the IBM Digital Badge Program. Earlier this year, the program received two significant awards from IMS Global Consortium and the IT Industry Council:

Platinum Medal - IMS Global Consortium

The IBM Digital Badge Program, in collaboration with Pearson Acclaim, was awarded IMS Global Consortium's highest honor, the 2017 Platinum Award. The IMS Global Learning Impact Awards program is the only global competition that recognizes outstanding, innovative applications of technology at an educational institution to support and improve learning based on evidence of impact. The Learning Impact Awards recognize the most powerful and influential uses of technology in support of learning worldwide. The submission process was rigorous and included a detailed application, a four minute video pitch, a comprehensive project document and a timed in-person pitch to a panel of judges.

Innovation of the Year - IT Certification Council

IBM’s Open Badge Program, in collaboration with Acclaim, was awarded the prestigious 2017 Information Technology Certification Council's (ITCC) Innovation Award. This was a major win, a transformation in the IT credential arena and an endorsement that IBM's digital credentials strategy is correct.

In less than two years, IBM has disrupted the status quo in the field of IT digital credentials. The IBM Digital Badge Program was officially launched in 2016 and now includes more than 1,000 activities. IBM has issued digital credentials to nearly 300,000 people and created a heat map of talent in 191 countries.
