France vs Germany: is it winning time already?

France vs Germany: is it winning time already?

We’re only a couple of hours away from the semi-finals and, as a Germany fan, I heard all the pre-match statistics between France and Germany. As you might know, Germany has never won against France in an official match in the European tournament. But what about this time?

To get more insights, I decided to take a look at the historical data about Germany’s performance. No complicated analysis, just a quick 10 minutes overview using Watson Analytics.

Pretty impressive! Eight times in the semi-finals (as Germany and West-Germany), and we lost only twice. This is really a confidence booster.

What else can I look at to get a better idea about tonight’s game? Age, maybe? That’s always a good indicator in football. Experience matters, doesn’t it?

Germany won the championship in 1972, 1980 and 1996, with an average age of 26.01, 26.46 and 28.19, as you can see in the graph. Also, the teams who reached the final, but lost (still, a great performance) had an average age of 26.46, 27.01 and 26.73. So, it seems that the best average age for the team is around 26 to 28 years old.

Let’s see how old the current squad is.

The current age this year is 25.39, so younger than the teams that reached the finals before. But our forwards are experienced in opening the match.

Also, I wanted to take a look at how confident people are about winning the match. Just a quick search in Watson Analytics for Social Media.

The positive sentiment is clearly more powerful than the negative one, both for women and men. It seems everybody’s talking about Germany being in the semi-finals, and they’re cheering for the players. On the other hand, it’s interesting to see the negative sentiment about the coach.

In any case, I’m sure this is going to be a fantastic match!
