Cognitive computing as it relates to Power Systems and the future if IT.
Dedipya
Iis there any current or projected involvement of Watson in the sporting industry?
Guy Clapperton
Jeopardy's a sport in some people's eyes...wiser heads than mine will be along in a second!
John Furrier
Toronto Raptors basketball team is a good example of the way the agency creates experiences for the entire business
Guy Clapperton
Thanks for that, John.
John Furrier
We love sports and data and run an event in Silicon Valley called #SportsDataSV
Dominic Day
I use it for my Fantasy Football team if that counts...
Paul Chong
https://ibm.biz/BdH6... yes we are through our vibrant ecosystem who are developing solutions to help teams improve insight and knowledge...the rule of marginal gains!
David Maddison
IBM #TryTracker gives some amazing results and predictions #ILoveRugby
Molly Borys
Why is cognitive being billed as the next big thing?
Moya
Cognitive enables us to have an immense compute power with the computer guiding us. The cognitive machine can guide us like a concierge and help us find solutions quickly
Moya
Having a cognitive machine to work with is like being supported by the worlds leading expert - the stronger the cognitive machines corpus the more world class the machine
Paul Chong
Hi Molly, I believe it will change every interaction and connection we have with systems and computers. for the better..i think we all deserve that!!
Moya
Take an example of having a cognitive machine in a data center the machine can advise and make every call center rep better than your best. Guiding their conversations based on the discussion and emotions of the caller.
Paul Chong
it wouldn't be possible without big data and smart systems but also because we have greater compute capacity to manage the outputs and therefore the insight & knowledge.
Moya
the cognitive computer can do this as it not only can understand speech it also understands the callers emotions - so it can then alter the path of the conversation. first class advisor
Guy Clapperton
In terms of power computing we hear a lot about Watson. What is Watson?
Moya
#Watson is the IBM Brand for Cognitive
Guy Clapperton
Can we teach Watson programming languages?
Paul Chong
Watson is the IBM brand for the cognitive computing era and dates back to the inception of the original project to beat contestants on a well known quiz show called jeopardy
Moya
#Watson was also the name of the cognitive computer we entered into Jeopardy, which it won!
Guy Clapperton
That's actually the second time it's come up and I'm going to have to ask - what's Jeopardy, for anyone who's unsure?
Paul Chong
Watson moves away from the idea of traditional programming to more teaching and training concepts
Moya
The Watson brand offers - complete solutions that give expert incites into subjects such as Medical advice for cancer research.
Paul Chong
a little like a graduate or child we have to provide Watson with the information to improve its understanding
Guy Clapperton
@pchong68 That applies to adults too!
Moya
Watson is also available as part of #BlueMix where you can utilize 28 cognitive computing capabilities which are available as APi's - such as Natural Language Processing
Paul Chong
Jeopardy is a very popular quiz show in the US that has unique, ambiguous and nuanced questions where you repond usually with a two worded response. A little like mastermind.
Paul Chong
good point...I am still learning for sure
Andrew Laidlaw
A lot of the big tech companies are talking a lot about Cognitive Computing, Neural Networks, or Machine Learning. Are these approaches all the same thing?
Moya
You missed out #DeepLearning :) and they are all related. Machine Learning being the process of a machine learning in a more human manner.
Paul Chong
great question best answered in an essay!!
Moya
Neural Networks are one of the types of Machine Learning as is Bayesian Reasoning. There are many different types of Machine learning and these are normally extremely compute intensive hence #POWER8 is great for #Cognitive
Moya
Bayesian Reasoning also benefits from the use of #FPGA's and with #CAPI it makes #Power and #OpenPOWER great server technologies for #Cognitive
Andrew Laidlaw
@pchong68 What makes the IBM / Watson approach different from how Google etc are approaching the problem?
Dedipya
does watson have the capability to revolutionise health care globally?
David Maddison
Yes it does, Precision Medicine is becoming all important as we improve patient care #WatsonOncology
Moya
Absolutely, and #Watson is already revoliutionising healthcare already - Check out the IBM Watson Solution www.ibm.com/smarterp...
Paul Chong
absolutely...healthcare itself is going through a significant transformational change from all forms of technology. Watson will play its part in improving research, discovery and patient outcomes which is what matters most.
Guy Clapperton
And if you check through the #IBMBeAmazed hashtag for this chat you'll find other examples
Mandie Quartly
The Watson powered robots were much admired at the IBM stand at CeBIT last week. Where else will we see them being used?
Moya
We see them being used extensively in Japan where Pepper is used in banking and Healthcare
Paul Chong
https://ibm.biz/Bd4j... great question...it is so cool...check out Aldebaran who developed our little friend
Paul Chong
we have given it a cognitive brain so its calling out to a Watson system
Moya
Here is a great video of pepper on a chat show showing off her talents https://www.youtube....
Guy Clapperton
@MoyaBrannan Thanks for that link Moya!
Mandie Quartly
We saw both Pepper and NAO at the conference - really impressive. How are IBM's customers planning on using their talents?
Brittini Bean
Can Watson be the AI in self driving cars?
Paul Chong
there are certainly opportunities for Watson to improve the interaction between driver/passenger and the systems that will support self-autonomous vehicles...it is an emerging and exciting area
Moya
This is a perfect type of application for Watson and he is used to visually recognize many images. Watson is used currently for Surveillance and uses vision as part of medical diagnosis
David Maddison
In the event of an accident, cars must answer the question: What is the least worst outcome? This requires deep analytics instantly
Guy Clapperton
@DavidMaddison3 I heard one futurologist saying that the only way driverless cars could work would be if they were *all* driverless.
John Furrier
How do I get Watson going if I want to evaluate it? Or do I have to get specialists at IBM to assist me? Lots has happened since the rollout last year. Updates on this?
David Maddison
A few ways that you can engage for free and have a play #WatsonAnalytics https://ibm.biz/Bd4j...
Moya
There are many parts to Watson - so if you want to use the APi's then they can be accessed via #BlueMix
Moya
As David says you can also use Watson against your data to try it out and run analytics, predictions and even link it with social media feeds
Moya
Check out Watson at Watson Analytics's
David Maddison
Also YouTube has some amazing video tutorials so #YouCan HelpYourselfSaidOliverTwist
Moya
There are also the IBM Watson Solutions which can be found www.ibm.com/WatsonAn... - there are so many Cognitive solutions - What area are you interested in?
John Furrier
